CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM

Once again we are approaching the Christmas Season, at which time, the first candle of the Advent wreath has already been lit. At this time, we must give a retrospect of how we have spent another year, and how our hearts are prepared for the arrival of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Unlike in most countries, in Mesolcina (and almost all of Switzerland), we did not expect the arrival of "Santa Claus" on a sleigh, but the call of Samichlaus (St. Nicholas), mounted on a small little donkey, arriving on January 6, accompanied by another characteristic figure, the Schmutzli, figure "sinister" that accompanies St. Nicholas everywhere.

These two figures, so different but at the same time so inseparable, remind us of our difficult road to Salvation. For to those children who were good and well behaved during the course of the year, Samichlaus will give some oranges (yellow with their green leaves, eternal remembrance of the Trivulzian Dynasty), oranges that sometimes can be accompanied by nuts or peanuts; but to those children who were bad and behaved poorly, they receive from the Schmutzli a "warning" that when the Child Jesus calls them, they may not be on the side of Heaven, but accompany them to purgatory or eternal damnation.

In this scenario, neither Samichlaus nor Schmutzli bring real gifts to the children ... but then, who brings them? Parents always teach that gifts are left on the night of the 24th by the Baby Jesus. Many might ask, if it would not be more coherent then would the Magi bring the gifts? Not really, because Salvation was brought into the world as an undeserved gift brought by Our Lord.

This interesting childlike analogy of Christmas in the Valleys of Mesolcina is also very useful for us adults. When we are called to the Presence of our Lord Jesus Christ, are we prepared for salvation?

May we use this Advent period to prepare our hearts, so that we may receive Our Lord Jesus Christ in the most correct and Christian way.

Novamente aproximamo-nos do Tempo do Natal, nessa época, em que as primeiras velas da coroa do Advento já foram acesas, devemos fazer uma retrospecção de como passamos mais um ano, e de como nossos corações estão preparados para a chegada de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo.

Diferente do que ocorre na maioria dos países, em Mesolcina (e em quase toda a Suíça), nessa época não esperamos a chegada do “Papai Noel” em um trenó, e sim a chamada de Samichlaus (São Nicolau), montado em um pequeno burrinho, que vêm no dia 06 de janeiro, acompanhado de uma outra figura característica, o Schmutzli, figura “sinistra” que acompanha São Nicolau em todos os lugares.

Essas duas figuras, tão diferentes porém ao mesmo tempo tão inseparáveis, nos lembram o nosso difícil caminho até a Salvação, pois, àquelas crianças que foram boas e bem comportadas no correr do ano, recebem de Samichlaus algumas laranjas (amarelas, com suas folhas verdes, eterna lembrança da Dinastia Trivulziana), laranjas essas que por vezes podem ser acompanhadas de nozes ou amendoins; porém àquelas crianças que foram más, recebem do Schmutzli uma “advertência”, de que quando o Menino Jesus as chamar, poderão não estar do lado do Céu, mas sim o acompanhar ao purgatório, ou ainda a danação eterna.

Nesse cenário, nem Samichlaus, muito menos o Schmutzli trazem presentes de verdade para as crianças... mas então, quem os trás? Os pais sempre ensinam que os presentes são deixados, na noite do dia 24, pelo Menino Jesus. Muitos poderiam perguntar, se não seria mais coerente então que fossem os Reis Magos a trazer os presentes? Na verdade não, pois a Salvação foi trazida ao mundo como um imerecido presente trazido por Nosso Senhor.

Essa interessante analogia infantil do Natal nos Vales de Mesolcina, é muito útil também para nós, adultos. Quando formos chamados à Presença de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, estaremos preparados para a Salvação?

Que utilizemos esse período do Advento para prepararmos os nossos corações, e assim podermos receber Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo da forma mais correta e Cristã.
